This document contains important information about the CyberFinder¬ package. Please read it completely before proceeding with installation.
What is CyberFinder?
CyberFinder provides the fastest, easiest, and most convenient way of navigating the Internet from the Finder or any application.
CyberFinder is:
Ñ A control panel.
The CyberFinder control panel allows you to use a Finder menu to create bookmarks that point to your favorite places on the Internet.
Ñ The easiest way to go from place to place in Cyberspace.
CyberFinder makes it easy to go from one type of Internet site (such as a Web page) to another (such as a newsgroup). Just double-click a CyberFinder bookmark and CyberFinder automatically launches the appropriate application and takes you to the site you wanted to visit. You can even use a special ╥hot key╙ to jump to Net sites from within any application ╤ even your word processor!
Ñ An easy bookmark manager.
If you can choose commands from a menu and double-click, you can use CyberFinder bookmarks to help you surf the Net.
Ñ A convenient bookmark manager.
Because you organize and store CyberFinder bookmarks right in the Finder, it╒s very convenient. CyberFinder bookmarks also provide a handy way to distribute your favorite Internet locations to fellow CyberFinder users.
CyberFinder is NOT:
Ñ A web browser or FTP client.
CyberFinder relies on the presence of a Web browser (and other helper applications) to get from place to place in Cyberspace.
Ñ An Internet access package.
CyberFinder won╒t provide you with access to the Internet. You must already be hooked up to the Net with a TCP/IP connection (with either SLIP, PPP, or a direct connection).
Ñ A cheese slicer.
Not that there╒s anything wrong with cheese slicers, mind you, but CyberFinder just isn╒t one.
Requirements
CyberFinder requires:
Ñ Mac SE or greater
Ñ System 7 Pro (7.1.1) or greater ╤ Certain nifty drag and drop features will be unavailable if you are running less than System 7.5.
Ñ An Internet connection ╤ You must have access to the Internet with a TCP/IP connection for CyberFinder to work. This includes SLIP, PPP, and direct connections. If you have access to the Internet but only via commercial online services such as America Online or eWorld (and not from an Internet service provider per se), CyberFinder won╒t work for you.
Ñ Helper Applications ╤ You must have the appropriate helper applications installed on your Mac to access the Internet services (Web pages, FTP sites, newsgroups, etc.) you are interested in. If you are missing a helper application for a specific type of Internet service, you will be unable to access the service using CyberFinder bookmarks. For example, if you don╒t have compatible software which can access FTP sites (such as Anarchie or Fetch), then you will be unable to use a bookmark representing an FTP site. You can find these applications (at least the freeware/shareware versions) at most Info-Mac mirror sites, such as <ftp://mirrors.aol.com/pub/info-mac/>.
If you are unsure of what Internet resources you can access, install the demo version CyberFinder from this installer and try it out yourself. Later on you can get the appropriate software for Internet services you don╒t currently have access to.

Installation
We suggest you follow these steps to ensure a successful installation of the CyberFinder package.
1. Restart your Mac with Extensions off.
Installation problems can usually be avoided by installing with Extensions off. To do this, hold down the Shift key while restarting your Macintosh. At the ╥Welcome to Macintosh╙ screen, you should see the ╥Extensions off╙ message, at which time you can release the Shift key.
2. Make a backup copy of the CyberFinder¬ Installer.
We suggest that you copy the CyberFinder Installer onto a floppy diskette, lock the diskette, and install CyberFinder from the copy. Store the original CyberFinder Installer diskette in a safe place, away from dust and magnets. This CyberFinder installer can be used for installing a demo version (which is fully-functional, but expires after 15 days) as well as a version of the software which won╒t expire.
3. You can print the text you are now reading by clicking the Print button below.
You can also save a copy of this text to your hard drive by clicking the Save button.
4. Click Continue.
By clicking Continue, you will be presented with a registration dialog where you can either click the Register button to install CyberFinder (in which case you need a registration number at hand), or click the Demo button to install a demo version of CyberFinder which will expire 15 days after installation. If you decide after trying out the demo version of CyberFinder that you╒d like to own the package, just contact Aladdin Systems and we╒ll get you registered for US$30. If you install the demo version, make sure to keep this installer handy so you can reinstall the non-expirational version once you╒ve decided you love CyberFinder and can╒t live without it. ;-)
5. Click Install.
Upon clicking the Install button, the CyberFinder package will be installed on your hard drive. This includes the CyberFinder control panel, the Internet Config extension, documentation, plus a few other doodads depending on what version of System software you have.
QuickStart and Questions
Before using CyberFinder, be sure to read the ╥Licensing Agreement╙ which can be found in the Read Us First! folder within the CyberFinder folder. Then it╒s a good idea to read the file ╥CyberFinder Read Me╙ which contains important information about using the software. For a QuickStart, read the User╒s Guide chapters ╥Setting up CyberFinder╙ and ╥How to Use CyberFinder╙. By referring to the User╒s Guide, you will find answers to most of your questions about using CyberFinder. The User╒s Guide also provides information about contacting Aladdin Systems should you need Technical Support, Customer Service, or licensing information. There is also balloon help to explain features in the CyberFinder control panel itself.
Distribution Information
You can always give away the ╥CyberFinder Installer╙ via online services, through User Groups, and to friends, family, or co-workers. Please remember to distribute the installer, and not CyberFinder╒s individual components. Redistribution of this software in any other way requires written permission from Aladdin. You cannot distribute CyberFinder for commercial purposes without first obtaining permission from Aladdin Systems. To obtain information about commercial distribution, please send e-mail to marketing@aladdinsys.com or phone 408/761-6200.

Known Problems
All versions of FreePPP prior to version 1.1 have a bug which will cause a crash when CyberFinder is installed. FreePPP 1.1 can be downloaded from any Info-Mac FTP archive in the /comm/tcp/ directory beginning late November/early December 1995.
